There are many different fillers available, & it seems you get different answers form each tradesman, so I will brake it down to 2 category's 1. DIY & 2. Professional Fibrous Fixers

For the people on this forum I will try to keep all answers as simple as possible.

To fill the joints on Ornamental plaster cornice/or other plaster products, most people would find Gyproc Cornice Adhesive one of the best, as it is also used to fit the cornice and is available from most builders merchants.

Mix the quantity needed, apply a creamy mix for small gaps or thicker mix if bridging a large gap, do not try to fill it to finish in one attempt, bridge the joint by either putting adhesive in with a putty knife, or scrapper anyway you want then wipe off the excess with a sponge do not worry if the mix is pushed back higher then the level needed, as when this has set you have a backbone to fill too, mix amount required again, only this time shape filler with the contours of the cornice shape using your tools.

If you are quite accurate with filling in only the places needed, you will have less work rubbing later

Gyproc Cornice Adhesive normally sets in approx 45mins so if you rub this down just before it fully sets using warm water and wet & Dry/Carborundum paper you will get the perfect finish contouring your rubbing with the went n dry and sponging

The Trade may use a British Gypsum product called Herculite Fibrefix (sold only in 25kg bags) if this is mixed with a Casting plaster you can also decrease the setting time. These 2 products are available from CCF Ltd or SLBM or http://www.ukplaster.com

Steer clear of fixing & filling with any gun type product a small few are quite good but very expensive for the amount needed Do not use liquid nails or Artex type product

liquid nails or similar are mostly not suitable because of the nature of the fibrous plaster being very porous, some of the many Gun products about seem to stick, however it is sometimes only temporally or short lived, because the fibrous Plaster Product sheds a chalky or dust layer, you can a diluted PVA or (Polyvinyl Acetate) to the product to seal it but would only recommend this if it has a known success

Do not use Artex type product, many are "reversible" meaning when in contact with damp/dampness or a water or water-leak can bring the Cornice or Product away from any ceiling causing possible injury & damage.
